Dizon fires 2 provincial public works officials over Benguet road tragedy

MANILA, Philippines — Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon removed two officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways-Cordillera Administrative Region (DPWH-CAR) following a fatal road accident in La Trinidad, Benguet blamed on glaring safety lapses.

Dismissed from their posts were District Engineer Isagani Cayme and Engineer III Marjory Banao after a cyclist plunged into a ravine and died along a damaged section of road in Beckel, La Trinidad.

The tragedy exposed the absence of critical road safety measures at the site, including warning signages, traffic control devices, and concrete barriers that could have prevented endangering motorists and cyclists.

Dizon said the collapsed portion of the road had been left exposed without adequate protection, putting lives at serious risk.

The DPWH chief stressed that negligence and complacency within the agency would not be tolerated, especially when public safety is at stake.
