MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. welcomed China’s decision to open direct flights between Cebu and Fujian, expressing hope that the development would spur greater interaction between the two countries.

Speaking at the official launch of the Chinatown Revitalization Phase II at the Hotel Lucky Chinatown in Binondo, Manila, Marcos thanked Chinese Ambassador to Manila Jing Quan for the good news that would strengthen ties between the Philippines and China.

“I thank you very much for the good news that you have brought about the flights going to Cebu," Marcos said in his speech.

"And I hope that it will be the beginning of more interactions and people-to-people exchange between China and the Philippines,” he added.

Ahead of Marcos’ speech, Jing announced that China has decided to open direct flights between Fujian and Cebu.

The ambassador said Cebu residents requested to open direct flights between Cebu and Fujian "because 90 percent of Filipino-Chinese, they're from Fujian, and Chinese tourists can directly come to Cebu visa-free."

Chinatown Revitalization Project

Marcos launched the Chinatown Revitalization Project in Binondo, Manila, reaffirming his commitment to preserving its enduring heritage while promoting cultural tourism and fostering economic growth.

Leading the official launch at the Hotel Lucky Chinatown in Binondo, Marcos said the initiative honored the long-standing bond of trade and cultural exchange between the Philippines and China.

“Binondo, founded in 1594, is described as the world’s oldest Chinatown. Beyond its age, what makes this place special is its long story of commerce, faith, and culture between Filipinos and the Chinese community,” the President said in his speech.

“This initiative is all about honoring shared histories and giving the district the much-needed attention and respect that it deserves," he added.

The President also highlighted the strong cooperation among the government, private sector, and the Filipino-Chinese community, which made the project possible.

“I look forward to the results of this project as we breathe new life into this place, which becomes a better foundation for a better, more united Bagong Pilipinas,” he said.

During the event, the President and First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos also viewed the lighted MacArthur Bridge; La Madre Filipina; Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar (Sta. Cruz Parish); Qui Shan Gate; and the Dragon Lights along Quentin Paredes Street.
