IPOH - A married couple was charged at the magistrate’s court here today with trafficking 480.6 grammes of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) last week.

Teoh Wai Loon, 44, and Lim Suk Pei, 38, nodded in understanding after the charge was read out before Magistrate S. Punitha, but no plea was recorded as the case falls under the High Court jurisdiction.

According to the charge, they were jointly accused of trafficking 480.6 grammes of MDMA at Room M333, The Pearl Orient Sdn Bhd, Bercham Bistari 4, Medan Bercham Bistari, in the Kinta district, at about 10.30pm on Aug 4.

The charge was framed under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, and punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, which provides for the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping of not less than 12 strokes if the death penalty is not imposed, upon conviction.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Zulqarnain Wan Asmira, while both accused were unrepresented.

The court set Dec 7 for case mention to obtain the chemical analysis report.

On Aug 6, police arrested seven individuals, including the couple, for allegedly being involved in a drug trafficking syndicate that had been active since June, following four raids in Ipoh and Tapah.

During the raids, police seized ketamine and MDMA, including about 2.6 kilogrammes of MDMA found at two houses in Tapah.

The drugs seized were estimated to be worth RM538,451, in addition to three vehicles worth RM224,000 and RM32,376 in cash. - BERNAMA
