- Legendary British athlete Mary Rand, the first British woman to win an Olympic track and field gold medal, has died at the age of 86.
- Rand secured her historic gold in the long jump at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics with a world-record leap of 6.76m.
- At the same Games, she also earned a pentathlon silver and a 4x100m relay bronze, becoming the only British female athlete to win three track and field medals in a single Olympics until Emma Finucane replicated the achievement in 2024.
- Born in Wells, Somerset, Rand was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1964 and received an MBE in 1965.
- Her former teammate Ann Packer described her as "the most gifted athlete I ever saw”, highlighting her exceptional talent before her retirement due to injury.
