Residents of Model Town protest against an illegal garbage dump.

Residents of Model Town in Jalandhar staged a protest on Wednesday against a garbage dump, alleging that it has triggered serious public health concerns in the area.

The protest was jointly organised by the Joint Action Committee (Model Town, Jalandhar) and the local Gurdwara Management Committee.

Protesters raised serious concerns over administrative negligence, alleging that despite repeated complaints and official orders, the site continues to be used as an unauthorised dumping ground without any regulation. The dump is located opposite Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Model Town, causing immense inconvenience to residents and devotees due to foul odour, unhygienic conditions and increased risk of disease.

Key demands raised by protesters included immediate clearance of garbage and scientific waste disposal, construction of a boundary wall to prevent future dumping, immediate ban on garbage dumping at the site and entry of a “red mark” on the property to restrict its sale until dues and violations are cleared.

Adding to the controversy, residents highlighted that the dumping site lies less than 100 metres from the residences of the Mayor and the Municipal Corporation Commissioner, raising serious questions about accountability.

Locals and protesters have warned that if immediate action is not taken, they will intensify their agitation and escalate the matter with the higher authorities, courts and environmental bodies.
