At least 12 people were killed and nine others injured in a mass shooting in South Africa, police said on Wednesday.
A group of around 10 people armed with machine guns stormed an informal settlement in Cleveland near the economic hub of Johannesburg at around 11 pm (2100 GMT) on Tuesday and opened fire, police said.
The suspects arrived in a white van and attacked the settlement from two sides, according to police. The dead included nine men and three women. The exchange of fire lasted more than an hour, a resident told broadcaster eNCA.
The motive for the attack was initially unclear. Police launched a large-scale manhunt for the perpetrators. Numerous weapons used by the attackers were seized at the scene, police said.
