A FIRE engulfed an eighth-floor apartment in Kajang late on Sunday night, destroying a significant stockpile of fireworks stored within the unit, authorities confirmed on Monday.

Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar, Deputy Director of Operations for the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), said emergency services received the call at 10.42pm.

"Thirteen personnel and officers, together with fire engines from Bangi Fire and Rescue Station and support from Semenyih Station, rushed to the scene, which was 13 kilometres away," he said.

Upon arrival 13 minutes later, firefighters found that the room containing the explosive materials was already 80 per cent engulfed in flames.

"Firefighters managed to control the blaze by 11.19pm, and extinguishing operations continued," Ahmad Mukhlis said, adding that the explosive materials were scattered throughout the apartment.

He confirmed that the fire has since been fully extinguished, and overhaul operations are underway to ensure the premises are safe. "No casualties have been reported in connection with the incident," he added.

The rapid containment of the fire prevented further damage to neighbouring units, but the incident highlights the dangers of storing large quantities of explosive materials in residential buildings. - February 9, 2026
