AGRICULTURE and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu has reassured the public that Malaysia’s food supply remains stable in the lead-up to the Aidilfitri celebrations.
Mohamad emphasised that this stability has been achieved through collaborative efforts between the government, local farmers, poultry producers, and egg suppliers, alongside initiatives from the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living.
"Through engagement sessions and open discussions, these stakeholders have supported the initiatives in place, which have contributed to stabilising prices this year," he told reporters after attending the Semarak Syawal programme at the Taman Sri Andalas farmers' market, in Klang.
He highlighted that this was the first time in decades that prices had not risen in the run-up to the festive season.
"As Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim mentioned, this is the first time before Hari Raya that prices have not gone up, but instead have actually decreased," he said.
The Minister also reassured the public that local rice remains available at competitive prices.
"In the past, when the price of imported rice soared to nearly RM40, consumers had to turn to more affordable options. Now that the price of imported rice has started to fall, consumers once again have a wider range of choices," he added.
He stressed that the government would continue to monitor food supply stability to ensure no disruptions. However, he also warned against complacency, acknowledging that unforeseen challenges such as natural disasters or disease outbreaks could still impact food security.
"Prolonged droughts, major floods, or livestock diseases can affect the food supply and push prices up. Fortunately, this year, such disruptions have not occurred," he said.
He urged the public to exercise moderation in their festive spending and avoid food wastage.
Meanwhile, Mohamad shared that the Semarak Syawal programme had achieved impressive results, with over RM16 million in sales recorded nationwide.
"The programme aims to assist communities in accessing quality and affordable daily essentials in preparation for Syawal. It also provides an opportunity for consumers to purchase fresh agricultural and agro-based products at more competitive prices," he said. - March 29, 2025
