MANILA, Philippines — Mayon Volcano's southwestern slopes collapsed on Saturday due to a lava flow-led pyroclastic density current (PDC), according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
On its Facebook page, a 7-second video of the laval flow was captured by the Phivolcs Quick Response Team.
Another post by the agency showed the density current on the Mi-isi gully on the volcano’s south-southwestern slopes.
“Plume drift is currently going west-southwestward. Estimated PDC run-out is 4 kilometers,” according to Phivolcs.
With alert level 3 in effect over Mayon, Phivolcs said entry into its 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone remained prohibited.
