MELAKA - The Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) has not received any resignations or withdrawals from its two council members appointed under the political party's quota so far.

Mayor Datuk Shadan Othman said therefore the appointments are still valid and both councillors need to carry out their duties as usual.

"In my opinion, political and administrative issues are different... so we will wait if there is a request from a council member to resign or withdraw. We will then look into it and consider it.

"We have appointed them as council members, if there is a withdrawal or resignation, it has to come from the individual themselves," he said to reporters after the MBMB 2026 Customer Day here today.

On Tuesday, the media reported that the Melaka DAP had announced its withdrawal of support for the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

The decision was made after the Melaka State Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026, which allows the appointment of seven unelected state assemblymen, was approved at the Melaka State Legislative Assembly.

The announcement was made by the Melaka DAP chairman Khoo Poay Tiong during a press conference attended by four DAP assemblymen namely Allex Seah Shoo Chin (Kesidang), Kerk Chee Yee (Ayer Keroh), Low Chee Leong (Kota Laksamana) and Leng Chau Yen (Banda Hilir).

In the announcement, Khoo was also reported to have said that all the local authority (PBT) councillors appointed by the previous state government would also resign. - BERNAMA
