France skipper Kylian Mbappé will make his 100th international appearance in Monday's World Cup second group match against Iraq, but US journalists seemed to forget he is only 27.

The striker, who scored twice in the 3-1 win over Senegal first up in Group I, was quizzed about whether he would follow Argentina great Lionel Messi and play in Major League Soccer in the US.

"We'll see," the Real Madrid forward told Sunday's pre-match news conference diplomatically, knowing a move from Europe is unlikely for many years.

"The American culture is different," he added. "There are no limits to ambitions, I like it."

Messi lifted the World Cup four years' ago in Qatar despite Mbappé's hat-trick in the final. Many thought that would be the Argentina icon's last appearance on the biggest stage of all given his move to Inter Miami.

But instead Messi, 38, has returned and scored a treble in Argentina's 3-0 opening win over Algeria. He moved level at the top of the all-time World Cup scoring charts with 16 goals alongside Germany's Miroslav Klose.

But Mbappé is only two behind and will bid to close the gap against the Iraqis. Their coach Graham Arnold has joked that he asked to play three goalkeepers in Philadelphia to stop the France star.

"There's nothing bigger than the national team," Mbappé said as he looked ahead to his 100th cap. "100, that's historic. All the more when it's the World Cup."

He has 58 goals in 99 games.
