KUCHING (July 3): A comprehensive four-year Plan of Action to promote the rights and well-being of children in Kuching South has been developed through a recent workshop.

The workshop, jointly organised by Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Unicef Malaysia, and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, brought together representatives from schools, government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and MBKS councillors and officers to contribute ideas and perspectives.

In a statement today, MBKS said the workshop was part of efforts to advance Kuching South’s participation in the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI).

During the workshop, Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng stressed the importance of a collaborative, whole-of-society approach, noting that the plan goes beyond just infrastructure development.

“While facilities are important, a truly child-friendly city must also address social, emotional and behavioural issues including mental health, bullying, gender inclusiveness and the promotion of positive values,” he said.

Wee emphasised that the initiative is ultimately about securing a better future for the younger generation.

“We are doing this for the children who live, learn and play in Kuching South today and who will one day shape our city’s future,” he said.

He added that MBKS is committed to ensuring that children grow up in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment, adding that the true measure of a city lies in how well it serves its most vulnerable citizens.

“Let this action plan be our commitment to serve not just for today, but for tomorrow,” said Wee.

Wee also expressed gratitude to Unicef Malaysia and Swinburne Sarawak for their continued collaboration and crucial support in making the workshop a success.

The MBKS CFCI Plan of Action Workshop marks a significant step toward embedding child-focused policies within local governance, he added.

With strong backing from its partners and the community, Wee said MBKS remains committed to making Kuching South a model child-friendly city, one that upholds and prioritises the rights, voices, and well-being of every child.
