The Amritsar Municipal Corporation (MC) carried out a special anti-encroachment drive against the unauthorised Sunday Bazaar operating along the stretch from Celebration Mall to SSSS Chowk on Sunday.
Acting on the directions of Municipal Commissioner Bikramjit Singh Shergill, the drive was led by Secretary-cum-Estate Officer Sushant Bhatia and supervised by Estate Department Inspector Aman Sharma along with a team of officials.
The action followed numerous complaints from local residents, colony welfare associations and members of the public regarding severe traffic congestion, obstruction of pedestrian movement and inconvenience caused by the illegal market. The encroachments were reportedly hindering the smooth flow of traffic on the busy corridor and raising concerns about public safety and access for emergency vehicles.
During the operation, the Estate Department removed unauthorised vendors and encroachments occupying public roads and footpaths. Officials also advised vendors not to set up stalls on public streets without prior authorisation and warned that strict action would continue against repeat violators.
Municipal Commissioner Bikramjit Singh Shergill said the corporation is committed to keeping public roads, footpaths and civic spaces free from encroachments to ensure the convenience and safety of citizens. He emphasised that regular enforcement drives would continue across the city to maintain smooth traffic movement and public accessibility.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Jai Inder Singh appealed to residents and vendors to cooperate with the municipal corporation in maintaining public order and avoiding the unauthorised occupation of public spaces.
