THE MCA flag will be flown at half-mast nationwide as a mark of respect for Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, who passed away this morning.

Its president, Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, said the order was issued to remember the late leader who had made many contributions to the party.

“I have ordered that the party flag be flown at half-mast at all MCA offices nationwide as a mark of the highest respect,” he said in a statement posted on Facebook today.

Commenting on Liong Sik’s role as the sixth MCA President, Ka Siong believed that the party experienced rapid change when the late Dr Ling carried out his duties with courage, clarity and extraordinary strategy during an era of economic and political uncertainty.

He added that through strong determination, Dr Ling led the party and the community in the face of crisis, resolved various challenges, and restored unity and confidence.

“His leadership not only strengthened MCA, but also strengthened the position of the Chinese community within the broader national framework,” he said.

Ka Siong also said that Dr Ling’s role as Minister of Transport for 17 years (1986-2003) was important in modernising the country’s infrastructure by overseeing the development of major projects that upgraded the country’s aviation, port and rail systems to international standards.

“His contributions helped lay the foundation for Malaysia’s globally connected economic growth,” he said.

Ka Siong also stressed that the main role realised by Dr Ling was the establishment of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).

“Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik was not just a leader, he was a nation builder, a community unifier, and a visionary.

“His legacy will live on through the institutions he built, the policies he formulated, and the life he lived,” he added. – April 4, 2026
