MELAKA — DAP Youth has challenged MCA to contest its traditional seats in the upcoming Melaka state election using its own party logo, following the Barisan Nasional (BN) party’s walkout when the coalition’s candidates were announced last night.

DAP Youth secretary Lim Chun Weng said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong’s gripe that seats previously contested by MCA had been allocated to other parties without consultation should be followed through with concrete action.

“If the MCA truly feels that the BN does not respect it — and that its dignity has been trampled upon — then it should stop relying on the BN’s ‘scales’ (dacing) symbol.

“If they truly possess dignity, they should use the MCA’s own logo and contest the traditional MCA seats that are being handed over to the Perikatan Nasional. If, in the end, the MCA returns to contest under the BN banner and accepts this seat allocation, then what was the point of the walkout?” he said in a statement.

Last night, Wee, MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon and several Melaka MCA leaders walked out of the candidate announcement event at the Melaka International Trade Centre.

BN is contesting 21 out of 28 state seats in the November 14 polls. Two MCA politicians were named in the lineup — Datuk Ngwe See See, the incumbent for Machap Jaya, and Datuk Lim Ban Hong, the incumbent for Kelebang.

Despite this, Wee last night said MCA had not been consulted on the seat allocations. He said he had been earlier informed candidates would not be announced and the event was to be only on the launch of the coalition’s election machinery. However, he  was told at the last minute that candidates would be announced.

This prompted the walkout, with Wee saying that MCA should not be “pushed around” as the party is part of BN and seat allocations had always been discussed collectively before they are announced.

BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, however, today said MCA’s dissatisfaction will be discussed and resolved before nomination day on October 31.

Ahmad Zahid said he understood the confusion that arose last night, citing a lack of prior notification from the event secretariat.

“I met Wee before the ceremony and, indeed, he was also surprised because he had not been informed by the secretariat that candidates would be announced at the ceremony.

“However, this is an issue that we will resolve. Yes, we will hold discussions before Oct 31,” Bernama reported Zahid saying today after officiating at the Bagan Datuk 2026 Sultan Nazrin Shah Bridge Run in Perak today.

Zahid said initial discussions on seat allocations had been entrusted to Melaka BN chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh together with the state MCA leadership.

He said there was still room for negotiations if MCA was unhappy with the candidates announced.

“I have not signed the letters of appointment,” Zahid said, adding there was still an opportunity for MCA to hold discussions. - October 25, 2026
