McDonald’s announces collaboration with popular energy drink

McDonald’s is now selling energy drinks.

The fast food giant announced Tuesday it is teaming up with Red Bull for its very first energy drink: the Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer, which will be available in the U.S. starting August 17.

In addition to offering 8.4-ounce Red Bull cans at McDonald’s restaurants, the new menu item will combine the energy drink’s classic flavor with blue raspberry syrup and freeze-dried dragonfruit inclusions.

Customers can also substitute in Red Bull Zero as the base if they prefer reduced sugar.

“We’ve seen growing enthusiasm for our crafted sodas and refreshers as fans look for more variety and options to fit every occasion,” McDonald’s USA Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer Alyssa Buetikofer said in a press release.

“They loved the Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer when we first tested it in the U.S., so we're excited to give fans nationwide the energy they’ve been craving with Red Bull. And we're just getting started,” she added.

In addition to the chain’s first energy drink, McDonald’s is adding Vanilla Swirl to its menu. The offering will add a vanilla flavor to Coca-Cola, Diet Coke or Coke Zero Sugar and top the soda with a cold foam similar to the crafted drinks sold at Dunkin’ and Starbucks.

The store is also offering the same flavor swirl with its Orange Dream with Fanta. Plus, new reduced sugar options will be available, including Diet Dr Pepper, Dr Pepper Zero Sugar and Sprite Zero Sugar.

This is not the first change to the drinks menu that McDonald’s has made in recent months. In May, the restaurant announced a new drink line-up, which includes a Mango Pineapple Refresher with strawberry popping boba and a Dirty Dr Pepper with cold foam.

Energy drinks and crafted sodas, also known as “dirty” sodas, are becoming more popular among Americans, particularly in younger generations looking for new ways to get their caffeine fix. McDonald’s began testing out the viral dirty sodas with customers at more than 500 locations across America last summer.

It comes as the company is fighting to win back customers by offering new menu items like the Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer as well as cheaper items with their value menus. In April, the store shook up its menu by introducing a simpler McValue menu, which offers 10 items that cost $3 or less.
