MCMC and Selangor state government sign an MoU to develop smart connectivity, public safety, and flood management, backed by RM450 million

SHAH ALAM: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Selangor State Government have formalised a partnership for smart city development through a Memorandum of Understanding.

The MoU, signed today, focuses on three key areas coordinated by the Selangor Integrated and Intelligent Operations Centre.

These are the development of smart connectivity infrastructure, enhancement of public safety and traffic management, and the implementation of smart flood management.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the collaboration aligns with the Selangor Smart Action Plan 2025.

“This collaboration is in line with the aspirations of the Selangor Smart Action Plan 2025 to be a leading smart state and digital economy,” he said.

He emphasised the plan’s focus on using technology to boost public service efficiency, citizen well-being, and urban competitiveness.

To support the initiative, Fahmi announced an increased allocation of RM450 million, up from an initial RM350 million.

He explained that smart connectivity, including fibre optic expansion and public Wi-Fi, will form the foundation of the smart city.

This infrastructure push aims to ensure Selangor residents enjoy broader, more stable, and higher-quality internet access.

“For the people of Selangor, this initiative will improve quality of life through more efficient and responsive public services,” Fahmi added.

He stated that wider digital connectivity ensures no group is left behind from the digital era’s economic and social benefits.

The data-integrated approach will also enable more accurate and sustainable policy decisions by the state government.

Fahmi noted the initiative acts as a catalyst for Selangor’s digital economy and attractiveness as an investment destination.

He also revealed that Selangor achieved 96.9% 5G network coverage as of December 31, 2025.

This makes it the leading state for 5G coverage in Malaysia.

The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, graced the event to witness the MoU exchange.

Also in attendance were the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
