JOHOR BAHRU: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has the right to summon any individual for investigation if a complaint is received, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.
“Usually, if there is a complaint, they (MCMC) will open an investigation paper and after that, they will refer the matter to the relevant agency,” she said.
She said this when commenting on MCMC’s move to summon a social media influencer who offered to conduct a detailed background check (“scrut”) on PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar.
“If a complaint is lodged and MCMC feels there is a need, they have the right to take action,” Teo said at a press conference after launching the Karnival Kita MADANI X Program MADANI Rakyat (PMR) at the PPR Sri Stulang Multipurpose Hall here today.
When asked about public sentiment that summoning the influencer was a heavy-handed move, Teo said MCMC should provide clarification on the matter.
“I think MCMC needs to explain why the individual was summoned. Typically, after an investigation, the matter is referred to the relevant agency to determine whether there is a case or not,” she said.
Recently, a social media influencer known as Aliff Ahmad claimed he was summoned by MCMC after allegedly offering to conduct a “scrut” on Nurul Izzah’s work and sources of income if a Facebook post received 20,000 shares.
