KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has the authority to call up individuals for investigation if complaints are lodged, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.

This comes amid the agency’s move against a social media user who targeted PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar.

The influencer, known as Aliff Ahmad, had allegedly offered to conduct a “scrut” – a detailed background check – on Nurul Izzah’s work and sources of income if his Facebook post received 20,000 shares.

He then claimed he was contacted by MCMC over the post, which gained traction online.

“Usually, if there is a complaint, they (MCMC) will open an investigation paper and after that, they will refer the matter to the relevant agency,” Teo told reporters after launching the Karnival Kita Madani X Program Madani Rakyat at PPR Sri Stulang, Johor Bahru, today.

The deputy minister stressed the commission has the legal discretion to act when necessary.

“Typically, after an investigation, the matter is referred to the relevant agency to determine whether there is a case or not.”

Meanwhile, at a separate event in Kulai, Teo revealed that MCMC removed over 32,000 pieces of scam-related online content between January and April this year, with losses nearing RM800 million.

“In just four months, the number of takedowns reached 32,436 – nearly half the total removed in all of 2024,” she said, calling the trend “deeply worrying” and highlighting the rise in fictitious investment scams.

To combat this, Teo said the government is expanding digital literacy and online safety campaigns through school programmes under the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS), and has urged educational institutions to work with the ministry.

The announcement was made at the Nadi Aspirasi Nasional bersama Anak Muda programme, which aims to strengthen ties with the Indian community. Teo added that Kulai was the first location for this year’s rollout, with upcoming stops planned in Perak, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur. – May 17, 2025
