PUTRAJAYA - More than 127,000 scam contents across various social media platforms have been detected by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and requested to be taken down by the respective platforms, said Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.
He said that this total was recorded from January 1 until today, with 53 percent of them detected on Facebook and 39 percent on TikTok.
"This total represents 27 percent of all content removal requests made, while the remainder involves other social media platforms. The issue of scam crimes, mostly utilising fake accounts, is among the most requested to be removed by the MCMC.
"We see that Facebook and TikTok are the two platforms where most of these scam crimes are detected," he said at a press conference following the Cabinet Meeting here today.
In this regard, Fahmi advised the public to verify information through the Sebenarnya.my and MyCheck portals, as well as to obtain information from mainstream media to avoid becoming victims of fraud.
In the meantime, he added that the government has given a period of several months to identified social media platforms to ensure compliance with two codes established to address harmful content that threatens users' property and lives.
According to him, the two codes are the Child Protection Code (CPC) and the Risk Mitigation Code (RMC), which came into effect on June 1 under the Online Safety Act 2025 (Act 866).
"Identified social media platforms must comply with both of these codes, and we are giving them time over the next few months to ensure all actions are taken in a coordinated manner to prevent harmful content that can threaten property or lives from being allowed on their respective platforms anymore," he said.
Fahmi stated that this action is important given that the process of taking down each piece of content requested by the government requires time and resources.
"For every piece of content requested to be taken down, MCMC personnel require 30 to 45 minutes to fill out forms and submit them to the relevant parties. So it indeed consumes time and incurs high costs for the government," he said. - BERNAMA
