PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission is expanding its Cashless Society initiative to Melaka, the Federal Territories and Johor. This strategic move aims to strengthen digital trust and empower communities within a cashless economy.
The expansion was discussed during a recent roundtable session themed “Digital Trust and Community Empowerment”. The session brought together representatives from federal and state agencies, industry players and community groups.
MCMC stated the session served as a strategic platform to refine digital ecosystem priorities. These priorities include cyber security, digital literacy, consumer protection and public confidence in cashless transactions.
“Attended by 70 representatives from various organisations, the session is expected to enhance digital literacy and trust,” MCMC said. It is also designed to build public confidence and enable rural communities to navigate the digital environment safely.
The discussion aligned the objectives of the Cashless Society Initiative Phase 4 for 2026 with stakeholders. This included managers of the National Information Dissemination Centres and other key parties.
The initiative was first launched in 2023 across 28 NADI centres to accelerate grassroots digital adoption. By 2025, the programme had expanded to 174 locations nationwide, reflecting MCMC’s ongoing commitment.
The initiative has been strengthened with internet safety elements aligned with the Safe Internet Campaign. Community capacity-building through Train-the-Trainer programmes among NADI managers has also been a focus.
MCMC said the initiative raises awareness of online risks and scams. This effort aligns with the implementation of the Online Safety Act 2025.
“By using cashless payments as an entry point to digital services, MCMC is leveraging expanded coverage and improved internet quality under JENDELA,” it said. This ensures communities can access and fully benefit from technology.
Between 2023 and 2025, the initiative attracted 62,574 visitors and recorded 26,022 cashless transactions. It also involved 4,572 new digital merchants and conducted 1,348 awareness activities based on its four main pillars.
