MCMC probes five individuals for spreading false petrol and diesel price increase claims on Threads, with three already called in for questioning

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched investigations against five individuals suspected of spreading false information about fuel price hikes.

The false posts, which circulated on the social media platform Threads, claimed petrol and diesel prices would increase.

MCMC confirmed that three of the five individuals have already been summoned to have their statements recorded.

“The content spread by all individuals regarding the increase in petrol and diesel fuel prices was found to be false, misleading and potentially causing anxiety among consumers,” the commission said in a statement.

It added that the posts used edited visuals falsely attributed to TV3’s news bulletin.

TV3 has since issued a denial, confirming the viral content was not produced by them but by a third party.

MCMC stated it received a complaint from TV3 regarding the misuse of its branding.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

This section provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.

MCMC emphasised it takes seriously any misuse of social media platforms to mislead the public.

“Strict action will be taken against any individual found to have violated existing laws,” the statement read.

The public is reminded to use social media responsibly and not abuse communication facilities in a way that could harm public harmony.
