The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has called in an individual to assist in investigations into an offensive, racist post uploaded to their social media platforms.

Taking to their X page, MCMC revealed that the post in question allegedly included a narrative on the appointment of the first Malaysian Chinese senior officer being promoted to Lieutenant General in the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM).

They wrote, “The content is believed to touch on the appointment of a new Lieutenant General of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) with a racist narrative that has the potential to spark provocation and threaten national unity and harmony.”

“Following this, the individual was called to provide a statement and assist in the investigation. MCMC also seized 1 mobile phone and 1 SIM card to complete the investigation.”

Their investigations are being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment for up to 2 years, or both, upon conviction.

They also took the time to remind the general public to avoid uploading, sharing and disseminating content that touches on the sensitivities of religion, race and royal institutions (3R), especially when it can divide society and threaten national harmony.

While MCMC’s statement did not reveal the identity of the individual, the investigation comes after PAS politician and preacher, Zaharudin Muhammad, came under fire for his post about a future Malaysian-Chinese Prime Minister, which included a photo of the newly promoted Lieutenant-General.
