CYBERJAYA – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded a statement from an individual over a racially charged social media post linked to the recent appointment of a Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) lieutenant general.

In a statement today, MCMC said the content was believed to contain racially provocative elements related to the appointment, with the potential to incite provocation and undermine national unity and harmony.

“As part of the investigation, the individual was called in to give a statement and assist with the probe.

“MCMC also seized a mobile phone and a SIM card to facilitate investigations,” it said.

The investigation is being carried out under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, a jail term of up to two years, or both upon conviction.

MCMC reminded the public not to upload, share or circulate any content that touches on religious, racial or royal institution sensitivities (the 3Rs), especially those that may divide society or disrupt national harmony.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Malaysia’s digital space and maintaining it as a safe, respectful environment in line with efforts to strengthen unity among the country’s diverse communities. – July 1, 2025
