MCMC investigates China Press for a reported mistranslation of the King’s parliamentary address, following a public complaint under the CMA.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating an online report by China Press over an alleged misinterpretation of a royal statement.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the probe follows an official public complaint regarding the King’s address at the opening of Parliament’s new session.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
This section addresses the misuse of network facilities that could cause public confusion, anxiety, or disrupt harmony.
Fahmi stated that any separate police report would be handled fully by the Royal Malaysia Police.
He also urged the Malaysian Media Council to uphold media standards and accountability.
This is to ensure compliance with journalistic ethics and promote responsible reporting.
The council should act as a self-regulatory platform for handling complaints professionally, he added.
Fahmi advised the public to avoid making excessive or defamatory comments on social media.
He called for respect for the monarchy institution and for the legal process to take its course.
The reported translation error in the royal address was related to the Malay language. – Bernama
