MCMC probes individual for uploading false, offensive content on CJ's appointment

THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating an individual suspected of uploading false and offensive content via his Instagram account.

Based on the complaint received, the individual is believed to have uploaded a false post regarding the appointment of the Chief Justice.

To assist in the investigation, a statement was recorded at 2.30pm today at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters.

Also seized were a mobile phone and sim card, the MCMC said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act

588] which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment for up to two (2) years, or both, upon conviction.

MCMC views seriously the dissemination of false and extremely offensive content that affects the integrity of the country's judicial institutions.

Misuse of social media for such purposes can threaten public trust and national peace and action will be taken in accordance with existing legal provisions. - July 18, 2025
