THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it takes seriously the misuse of online networks and digital platforms that could undermine social harmony, urging the public to verify information before sharing it to avoid misunderstanding or hostility.
In a statement issued in Cyberjaya on Sunday, the regulator warned that strict enforcement action will be taken against individuals or groups found to be producing or circulating prohibited content.
“MCMC is issuing a stern warning to all parties not to produce or disseminate content related to race, religion and royalty (3R), especially content that is provocative, insulting, incites hatred or may trigger public tension,” it said.
The commission added that it will work closely with the Royal Malaysia Police and other relevant agencies to monitor, investigate and take action against violations of the law.
Offenders may be prosecuted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries penalties of fines of up to RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
MCMC also said it will act against platform providers that fail to cooperate with enforcement efforts, reminding them of their responsibility to comply with Malaysian law and prevent abuse of their services. - May 3, 2026
