MANILA, Philippines — American tennis player Caty McNally may have fallen to Filipina star Alexandra “Alex” Eala, but she left Toronto with a lasting appreciation for the Filipino fans who filled the stands and cheered throughout their clash.
The world No. 70 McNally bowed to No. 20 Eala, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, in a grueling three-set battle in the Round of 32 of the National Bank Open at Sobeys Stadium Centre Court in Toronto, Canada.
Despite the defeat, McNally said the experience of playing before a packed and energetic crowd was one she would not forget.
“Toronto, last night was unforgettable. The atmosphere out there was absolutely electrifying. I wish the result was different, but I left my whole heart out on the court. The journey continues and my time is coming,” McNally wrote on her Instagram story.
The American also expressed her gratitude to the fans who reached out to her after the match, singling out the Filipino community for their warmth and support.
“Beyond thankful for all the love and kind messages received from people all around the world, but especially the Filipinos,” she added.
McNally entered the showdown with Eala riding high after pulling off one of the tournament’s biggest upsets, defeating world No. 7 Linda Noskova in the Round of 64.
But Eala proved too strong in the next round, recovering from a second-set setback to close out the match and advance to the Round of 16.
While the majority of the crowd came out to support Eala, McNally’s message showed that the Filipino fans’ enthusiasm extended beyond their homegrown star, leaving an impression on one of her opponents as well.
