Kota Kinabalu: Sabah is gearing up to host a mega durian event this October, as the Sabah Durian Summit (SDS) 2025 gathers global durian experts, farmers, investors and agro-tourism players in one of Southeast Asia’s biggest agro-industry showcases.
The three-day summit, scheduled from October 3 to 5 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), is expected to draw around 200 participants under the theme “Sabah AgroTourism: Charting Its Own Future.”Organised by MaSDa (Making Sabah Durian Amazing), SDS 2025 will run alongside major expos including AgTech International Agro Expo, Seed Asia, Livestock Asia Expo, Aquasia and Ag Machinery Expo that will be creating a powerful one-stop platform for the region’s agriculture and agribusiness communities.
Organising Chairman Donald Stephens said the summit represents a turning point for Sabah’s fruit industry.
“SDS 2025 is more than just about durian, but it’s about showcasing Sabah as a serious player in agro-tourism and global agri-business.
“This is where farmers, researchers and entrepreneurs will meet, collaborate and unlock the true potential of Sabah’s fruit industry,” he said when met by Daily Express, recently.
He emphasised that SDS 2025 is designed to attract both local and international participation.
“We want to put Sabah on the map, not only as a producer of high-quality durian but also as a destination where agriculture, technology and tourism come together. The opportunities here are enormous,” Donald said.
The event will feature free-to-attend seminars, policy forums and networking opportunities on the first two days. It will conclude with a special AgroTourism Study Tour on Oct 5, offering immersive experiences in orchards, IoT-driven farm management, post-harvest processing and farm-to-table tastings.
A strong international line-up will headline the summit, with experts from Thailand, Indonesia, China, the Philippines, Malaysia and Sabah sharing knowledge on durian cultivation, export strategies, consumer demand and innovation in agro-technology.
“With themes spanning farm practices, certification, logistics, technology and policy, SDS 2025 aims to open new opportunities for investors, entrepreneurs and smallholders, while elevating Sabah as a durian and agro-tourism powerhouse in the global market,” Donald said.
