In the enchanting nights of Penang during the 60s and 70s, the allure of The Gypsy Caravan disco at Rasa Sayang Hotel on Batu Feringhi Beach remains etched in my memory.

The melody of The Alleycats' "Sekuntum mawar merah sebuah puisi" transports me back to a bygone era.

The Gypsy Caravan was the epitome of style, a costly yet coveted spot where connections with the bouncer made it affordable. My friendship with the bartender further lowered the expenses, a relief for a modestly paid instructor.

Amidst the rhythmic beats, the Alleycats Penang's soul-stirring performances added a special touch. The red rose, especially in the poetic lines of "A red rose, A poem, For a girl of choice, In the month of February," became a cherished symbol of love, especially on Valentine's Day.

My journey to Penang in 1974, with its humble airport, marked the beginning of a love story entwined with the essence of The Alleycats' song, although it officially released seven years later in 1981. The tune resonated with my hippie days in New York during the 60s and 70s, reminiscent of the era's vibrant spirit.

Falling in love in February, haunted by the memory of a farewell at JFK's boarding gate, a bouquet of roses and Robert Burns' verses became my solace. The words "O my luve is like a red, red rose..." echoed the depth of emotions, bridging the distance between New York City and Georgetown Penang, though it felt like ten thousand miles.

The challenges of a long-distance relationship unfolded, a lesson sailors often know. In bustling Penang, with its bustling port and young allure, Arumugam's "Red Rose and a Verse" became a melodic companion, weaving a tale of love and farewells amidst the echoes of the Vietnam War's conclusion.
