This morning, stepping into what was once Port Klang's most celebrated Indian restaurant, I was immediately drawn to a few portraits gracing the main dining hall that hung superciliously. They were custodians of a bygone era, radiating a grandeur that the present-day establishment seemed to have lost.

The first, prominent portrait was of the founder of the restaurant, Mr. Meyappan. The other two portraits were of two VVIP diners who had frequently graced the establishment's tables during its heyday. The first portrait, featured Tun Ling Liong Sik, the then Minister of Transport. whose gaze exuded an air of authority, a clear indication of the restaurant's standing and influence.

Beside him hung other equally dignified portraits, capturing the essence of other prominent figures who frequented the eatery. Among them were Dato' Sri Nyanasegaran, who was with the Customs and now Director of Wyndam Hotels, and two former General Managers of LPK, Datuk Rajasingam and Datuk David Padman.

Others who also patronized the place regularly were the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Transport, Dato Chua Kok Chin. Apart from that were portraits of Datuk Teh Kim Poo, the late L Krishnan of H&C and also V Balakrishnan, the Assistant General Manager of R&D then. The photos weren't just decorative pieces; they were a testament to the restaurant's golden era, when it served as a hub for the town's most influential personalities. It was evident that Mr. Meyappan, the founder, personally attended to their needs, ensuring their dining experience was nothing short of exceptional. These portraits, which were proudly displayed, served as a shrewd and effective marketing strategy, subtly communicating the restaurant's prestige and the caliber of its clientele. Looking at them, I could almost taste the legendary curries and briyani that drew crowds from all corners of Port Klang and beyond. These portraits weren't just decorative; they were a vibrant narrative of the restaurant's peak, a visual reminder of the extraordinary personalities who had shaped its destiny.

Today, however, the restaurant is a poignant shadow of its former self. The once bustling dining room is now eerily quiet and the vibrant energy replaced by a muted stillness. The gleam on the silverware is duller, the air a little heavier, and the aroma of spices, though still present, lacked the tantalizing zest it once had. It was a bittersweet observation; the food is still good, a testament to the enduring recipes, but the soul of the place, that intangible spark ignited by Mr. Meyappan's passion and presence, seems to have dimmed since his passing.
