Mental health group opposes social media ban for youth under 18

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Mental Health Association (PMHA) has opposed a proposed blanket ban on social media for those under 18, arguing that it would not address the complex causes of youth violence.

In a statement, PMHA National Executive Director Carolina Uno-Rayco described the proposed ban as “a non-solution to keeping young people safe.”

The association said preventing violence, including school shootings, requires a comprehensive approach involving mental health support, safe school environments, responsible online platforms, and early identification and intervention.

PMHA also noted that social media provides young people with spaces to connect, learn and express themselves, while recognizing the need to protect them from harmful online content.

Instead of a blanket ban, the association called for stronger platform safeguards and greater support from families, schools and communities.

Uno-Rayco said the association supported online safety measures and digital literacy to help young people navigate online and offline spaces safely.

PMHA said protecting young people should also respect their right to connect, participate, learn and engage with others.
