Co-hosts Mexico had an explosive first half to beat Ecuador 2-0 on Tuesday and reach the last 16 of the World Cup.
The Mexicans will play again in Mexico City and face the winner of Wendesday's clash between England and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Taking advantage of the very loud fan support, Mexico seemed unstoppable in the first 45 minutes of the match.
The home side took a deserved lead in the 22nd through Julian Quiñones, who had also scored the first goal of this year's tournament.
Quiñones latched onto a ball and drove into the box, cutting onto the right before unleashing a mighty strike inside the near post.
Raul Jimenez doubled their lead in the 31st after a defensive mess from the opponents.
Ecuador gifted him the ball on the edge of the box and Jimenez played a one-two with Quiñones before blasting his effort into the net.
The pace slowed down after the break and Mexico's best chance to add a third came in the 67th, when Jimenez's volley was blocked and Cesar Montes' header from the resulting corner was tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Hernan Galindez.
"Team work is what matters most today. You can stand out as an individual, but that's only possible because of the team's great performance. That's our mindset. We have to keep fighting," Quiñones said after being named man of the match.
"That's how life is: you fight, fight, and fight until you get what you want. Thank you to everyone who supported us and believed in us."
Ecuador's participation in the World Cup ended with an unnecessary red card as Piero Hincapie was sent off in stoppage time after he covered his mouth in a heated exchange with Santiago Gimenez.
"We were outplayed in the first half. Then we fought back, but we couldn't find the goal that would have given us a boost," said Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece.
"I'm grateful to all the players and to the country for this journey and this adventure alongside them. I just want to say 'thank you'."
Ahead of the World Cup, football rulemakers International Football Association Board (IFAB) approved a new law stating that players covering their mouths in a confrontational situation with the opponent may be sanctioned with a red card.
The rule was brought in to stop potentially racist comments from being hidden from view after a controversial incident involving Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni and Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior during a Champions League match last season.
Paraguay's Miguel Almirón became the first player to be sent off for covering his mouth while speaking during an altercation during the group stage match against Turkey on June 20.
Match delayed due to weather conditions
The round of 32 game kicked off one hour later than originally planned due to adverse weather conditions.
"Kick-off has been delayed due to adverse weather conditions. The match will begin when deemed safe," football governing body FIFA said in a first statement.
The match was to originally start at 7pm (0100 GMT) but a thunderstorm was raging above the stadium since an hour before the original kick-off time.
In a second statement, FIFA said: "Due to adverse weather conditions in Mexico City, including risk caused by lightning in the vicinity of the stadium, the kick-off of the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match between Mexico and Ecuador has been delayed to 20:00 local time. The safety and security of all individuals is FIFA's priority. We thank all fans for their understanding and cooperation."
