Mexico v England LIVE: Furious Tuchel rants at referee despite heroic Three Lions reaching World Cup quarter-finals

England survived a mighty scare to secure a 3-2 victory against Mexico to advance at the World Cup 2026 thanks to Jude Bellingham’s quick-fire double and Harry Kane’s penalty in a classic tie at the Azteca Stadium.

A gritty rearguard performance late on, after Jarell Quansah’s red card left Thomas Tuchel’s side with 10 men, was enough to advance to the quarter-finals against Erling Haaland’s Norway and eliminate the co-hosts.

A hostile atmosphere at the Azteca saw El Tri start fast, but the Three Lions settled and broke the deadlock after Bellingham’s header following tremendous work from Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka. And it was 2-0 within 98 seconds as Bellingham converted from close range in another slick move by the Three Lions. The hosts responded superbly though, to spark wild celebrations inside the Azteca before the break as Julian Quinonez crashed home from close-range after England failed to clear a free-kick.

England’s hopes were hit in the second half after Jarell Quansah’s out of control challenge, with referee Alireza Faghani sending him off after a VAR review. But in a gripping second half, Anthony Gordon earned a penalty for the 10 men and Raul Rangel hauled down the Barcelona winger, with Harry Kane making no mistake with a clinical spot kick to restore the two-goal lead at 3-1.

Kane then dangled a leg inside the box with VAR recommending a check and referee Faghani opting for another spot kick, which Jimenez dispatched to bring the hosts within one goal. But despite wave after wave of pressure late on, including 11 minutes of stoppage time, England survived to advance. Follow all the latest reaction from Mexico v England below:

Gordon struck by altitude impact

04:50 , Alan Smith

"It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and a once in a lifetime atmosphere,” Anthony Gordon tells the BBC. “We came through it in the worst way possible. It was difficult. The altitude was difficult. The first 20 minutes, I felt in my chest in training yesterday - it was a bit worrying but it’s what we're paid to do, to handle these situations. We knew it would be tough but big players, big moments.”

“We’ll trust the process. The outcome we can never control.”

Tuchel praises 'proper mentality'

04:40 , Alan Smith

In his flash interview at the end, Tuchel says: "Very proud. We needed everything. It was super difficult. In the moments we thought we catch the momentum, we had setbacks. That is proper mentality.

“This team really mean it. When the going gets tough, they never give up, they never lose belief. It was one step more.

"We need to take this in. This is Azteca, it's Mexico, a crazy game. We left everything out there, every single one of us. We need to take this in, now it's full steam ahead."

Bellingham: The win is bigger than me

04:31 , Alan Smith

"Hard to gather it all together,” he tells the BBC. “10 men, defending how we did in our box, clinical like we were in their box. In years gone by, when I was growing up, we'd have probably crumbled but this team stuck together until the last minute. That's what this team is about."

On the referee he adds: "It is what it is. They are human as well. No worries."

On his goals: "This win is far bigger than me, the supporters who have come here, a difficult journey and their hard-earned money. This is for the whole country.”

On playing Norway, he says: "It's still one game at a time. Norway will pose a completely different threat."

And on Jordan Henderson’s celebration injury: "He's in a bit bother but our medical team have it under control.”

Henderson injured during celebrations

04:21 , Alan Smith

Jordan Henderson has been stretchered off and has received oxygen from medics having fallen over an advertising hoarding during Wonderwall.

"Jordan fell over there, something to do with his arm,” Kane says on BBC. The captain seems calm about it but the pictures look a little more serious.

We await more updates.

Speechless Kane delivers the most iconic of interviews

04:20 , Alan Smith

Kane has completely lost his voice so is squeaking away on BBC.

"It was a crazy game. We had to fight. I can't really talk. All the occasion, the team against us, we found a way,” he says, his voice breaking.

On the penalty concession, he added: "I thought I got the ball first. One of those where the ref gave a lot against us. In the end it don't matter. I'm happy.

And on the England fans, he adds: “Incredible, unbelievable. I can't even talk."

Up next

Norway await in the quarter-final - it will kick-off at the more reasonable time of 10pm BST on Saturday night in Miami.

Haaland v Kane! Odegaard vs his Arsenal clubmates!

Shearer hails 'incredible night'

04:12 , Alan Smith

“Those players have represented their country in magnificent form tonight. Every single player had the right attitude. Everything that could have gone against them, everything that was thrown at them, the energy, the altitude, they have got past all of that and they deserved it. That is an incredible performance from start to finish.

“When they were under the cosh the manager made the right substitutions. The subs came on and they did their job. What an incredible night.”

We deserved it - Rooney

04:10 , Alan Smith

Wayne Rooney on BBC: "One of the greatest results, performance, you saw grit, desire, everything you'd want in an England team.

“Down to 10 men, I was worried we say in too deep, too early. Gordon, the centre-backs, Pickford, fantastic, we deserved it."

04:09 , Alan Smith

Now it’s Wonderwall. And instead of singing on the pitch, the squad is climbing over the advertising hoardings and gets as close as they physically can to the travelling fans, just a group of photographers and a green barrier separating them.

This is such a special moment. A moment to celebrate one of the great England wins.

Tuchel is beaming as he embraces his players. Baddiel and Skinner blares out and there are tears in the eyes of Mexican players as their dream ends.

04:06 , Alan Smith

The players look exhausted. The celebrations are smiles and hugs rather than sprints and jumps. But the feeling will set in soon that England are into the quarter-finals and will face Norway next weekend. Or rather this weekend since it’s now past 4am Monday morning.

Mexico 2-3 England

03:40 , Alan Smith

77’ - I’ve already lost count of the number of crosses Mexico have pumped in only for a white shirt to clear since the restart.

The tension is already nearing unbearable levels. Can England retain their composure and focus to see this out?

Mexico 2-3 England

03:38 , Alan Smith

75’ - We’re back underway. There’s a long way to go because we’ll get a rather big chunk of added time.

Mexico 2-3 England

03:37 , Alan Smith

74’ - Anderson and O’Reilly are off, Spence and Burn are on. That’s a lot of defenders.

Referral goes Mexico's way again

03:34 , Kieran Jackson in Mexico City

Harry Kane is saying 'I get the ball' but he doesn't you know. Leg first. Another VAR referral goes Mexico's way. And finally, Raul Jimenez gets his goal as he waits for Jordan Pickford to commit before going the other way. 20 minutes to go - which way will this twist next?

Mexico 2-3 England

71’ - The hydration break is called. But it’s kicking off again. Sanchez is booked after claiming that O’Reilly has thrown an elbow at him off camera. O’Reilly is booked a few seconds later.

Cann reckons pen is correct

03:32 , Alan Smith

“Unfortunately Kane does kick his foot, it's like the Modric one, but Kane is unaware of the player coming. It's a foul and it's in the box, it's a penalty. It's the only referee sent to the monitor and stuck with his decision, but in this case, it's a penalty,” BBC’s refereeing expert says. Not many will agree.

GOAL! Mexico 2-3 England (Jimenez, 69 pen)

03:31 , Alan Smith

69’ - Jimenez stutters but squeezes his shot past Pickford. It’s calm amid the chaos from the Mexico striker. Now the nerves are dialled back up again.

PENALTY GIVEN! Mexico 1-3 England

03:30 , Alan Smith

68’ - It’s given. Watching the replay back Kane makes contact but it is a clear attempt to win the ball and not an obvious error from the referee. Jimenez has the ball and will take it.

VAR CHECK FOR MEXICO PENALTY! Mexico 1-3 England

03:29 , Alan Smith

66’ - Gutierrez goes down in the box following a duel with Kane. There is contact and the VAR wants the referee to take a look but this would be a farcical decision. They are both going for the same ball, there’s no obvious error from the referee.

Mexico 1-3 England

03:27 , Alan Smith

65’ - Mexico dial up the pressure. Quinones’ cross from the left is sent out by Stones for a corner.

Mexico 1-3 England

GOAL! Mexico 1-3 England (Kane, 60 pen)

03:22 , Alan Smith

60’ - Kane takes his time, stares at the ball on the spot and drives it into the left corner. Rangel goes the right way but has no chance.

PENALTY ENGLAND! Mexico 1-2 England

03:21 , Alan Smith

59’ - Kane knocks a long pass behind Alvarez and into Gordon’s path. Rangel rushes out and brings the Barcelona man down. That requires no VAR intervention. And Kane has a chance to double the advantage...

Mexico 1-2 England

03:19 , Alan Smith

57’ - Stones is on, Saka is sacrificed, and Konsa shifts across to the right.

Mexico 1-2 England

03:18 , Alan Smith

57’ - It’s Saka on the right of defence for now. But not for long.

Mexico 1-2 England

03:18 , Alan Smith

55’ - Now who goes to right back?

Meanwhile, Mexico have a free kick. Alvarado takes it and Gallardo tackles Kane in the box, ensuring England have a free kick. Gallardo then shouts at Kane as he goes down, a bit of spit (accidentally) flowing from his mouth as he does so.

QUANSAH SENT OFF! Mexico 1-2 England

03:16 , Alan Smith

It’s a silly challenge, reckless and out of control. Quansah deserves to be off and have no complaints.

He wins the ball but his leg is so high, his studs are raised and he plants them on the shin of Gallardo.

VAR CHECK FOR RED CARD! Mexico 1-2 England

03:15 , Alan Smith

52’ - Both benches are having a massive row after Quansah lunges to win the ball before colliding with Gallardo with his studs up. This could be a red...

Mexico 1-2 England

03:13 , Alan Smith

51’ - England are keeping it nicely - for now - and the hosts are getting very restless in the stands, raising the volume of their jeers.

Now Bellingham produces an utterly remarkable bit of skill and close control to evade three Mexico challenges - before Alvarez then gets in his way.

Mexico 1-2 England

03:12 , Alan Smith

49’ - O’Reilly hits the post! From the edge of the area his daisy-cutter looks to have beaten Rangel but it comes off the upright.

Mexico 1-2 England

03:11 , Alan Smith

48’ - O’Reilly drills a low cross in from the left. Kane and Saka are both trying to reach it for a tap-in but it drifts through everyone.

Kane meets Canelo

03:10 , Kieran Jackson in Mexico City

England keep Mexico waiting for two minutes or so at the start of the second-half; Harry Kane clasps the hand of Mexican boxer Canelo Alvaraz as he enters the pitch. Perhaps the most famous man in Mexico?

Mexico 1-2 England

03:09 , Alan Smith

47’ - Kane leaves his foot in on Lira, conceding a simple free kick.

There was a fireworks show at the break so our pictures are now being filtered by a sulphur haze.

Restarted! Mexico 1-2 England

03:07 , Alan Smith

46’ - Alvarez replaces Montes and takes the armband.

Mexico get us going again.

03:06 , Alan Smith

Mexico players have been back out on the pitch and ready to go for about two minutes.

England are just emerging slowly from the dressing room.

Anthony Barry's half-time assessment

03:00 , Alan Smith

"No frustration,” he says. “A full throttle match. Every minute feels like the 90th. We prepared our players...we had to suffer here.”

He says aim was to get to water break with match scoreless and adds: “We had the quality to come into the game. Jude does what he does and from there it's disappointing to conceding from a set piece.”

Seven dizzying minutes

02:56 , Kieran Jackson in Mexico City

What an end to that half - seven dizzying minutes with three goals before three golden chances for Mexico to score an equaliser. Raul Jimenez, in particular, could have had a hat-trick! A masterclass in heading but, so far, Jordan Pickford has been up to the task. Still, that man again - Julian Quinones - with a thumping finish to get Mexico back in it. What a second half we have set up now."

Rooney's half-time analysis

02:56 , Alan Smith

“I thought they did well to get to the hydration break, more energy, then the first goal, a second, but the last five minutes was a bit nervous,” he says of England’s performance.

“The first goal was key. There are four aspects. Pickford gets the ball, throws it to Rice, driving up the pitch. Saka holding his width, then a committed full-back on the outside, Bellingham getting in there and it's a really good header.

“The connection between Jude and Kane is really good. Kane goes to the back post to then go to the front post, and Jude goes to the front post before going to the back post. We've said this, wingers who can go on the outside, it makes it easier for the forwards.”

Alti-Jude's super fast brace

Half-time! Mexico 1-2 England

02:51 , Alan Smith

I know the air is thin up there but it’s time to breathe.

England are ahead. But they were rattled after conceding and need to find some composure.

Mexico 1-2 England

02:49 , Alan Smith

49’ - From the corner, Jimenez wins a free header and knocks it down to Montes. He is about to bundle in from two yards but Bellingham intervenes with a last-ditch challenge. And the subsequent corner is headed away.

England are quaking here.

Mexico 1-2 England

02:48 , Alan Smith

48’ - Pickford denies Jimenez with a stunning save, touching the headed attempt over his bar after Alvarado put it on a sixpence from the right.

Two more minutes to hold out.

Mexico 1-2 England

02:46 , Alan Smith

46’ - Oh dear, England are rattled now. Quinones holds the ball up too easily in front of Quansah. He then pulls it back to Jimenez. It looks like he is going to score but... a relieved Pickford watches the shot drift wide.

 (Reuters)

Mexico 1-2 England

02:45 , Alan Smith

45’ - There will be five added minutes. They will feel rather long for England’s players.

Mexico 1-2 England

02:44 , Alan Smith

44’ - There were 98 seconds between Bellingham’s goals for those on clockwatch. England need to try and kill the next few minutes to protect that lead, Mexico’s tails are back up.

GOAL! Mexico 1-2 England (Quinones, 42)

02:43 , Alan Smith

That’s some response. Quinones smashes into the roof of Pickford’s net with a half volley after England fail to deal with a set piece from the left. Konsa tries to clear but only sends it straight into the path of Mexico’s leading scorer.

Mexico 0-2 England

02:40 , Alan Smith

Right, the first goal. It starts with Pickford, Rice progresses it and feeds clubmate Saka on the right. He then crosses towards Kane but it’s just out of his reach ... and Bellingham arrives to head home.

The second comes pretty much immediately after the restart with Kane slotting the ball across for the Real Madrid man to finish again.

Mexico look a complete mess. Now England must simply keep their heads and frustrate a home crowd that must not be far from turning on their players.

GOAL! Mexico 0-2 England (Bellingham 38)

02:38 , Alan Smith

And before I can type out the full description for that opener Bellingham has scored again!

GOAL! Mexico 0-1 England (Bellingham, 36)

02:36 , Alan Smith

Play the darts song!

Bellingham heads home from Saka’s cross and England are in front.

Mexico 0-0 England

02:35 , Alan Smith

35’ - Mexico now look dominant. England are dropping deeper and the hosts are trying to find a way through with little success but there is a growing sense that they are controlling proceedings.

Mexico 0-0 England

02:33 , Alan Smith

34’ - Saka does not look quite right here. He has been anonymous for long spells and has just given the ball away cheaply near halfway.

All of England’s promising work has come down the opposite flank.

Mexico 0-0 England

02:32 , Alan Smith

32’ - At the end of a long spell of Mexico possession, Romo drills high, high and high over the bar.

Mexico 0-0 England

02:30 , Alan Smith

30’ - A lull, which England won’t mind too much at this stage.

It’s all a bit stop start thanks to a referee who is overly fond of his whistle.

Mexico 0-0 England

02:27 , Alan Smith

26’ - We’re back underway.

And straight from the restart Gordon causes more havoc, keeping the ball in play and cutting inside Sanchez, who appears a real weak link, before shooting at Rangel.

Mexico 0-0 England

02:23 , Alan Smith

23’ - Commercial break.

It’s 15c in Mexico City with a real feel temperature of 7c.

Mexico 0-0 England

02:21 , Alan Smith

21’ - ... but his delivery is headed away for an England throw-in which O’Reilly then puts out for a goal kick following some sort of mix up with Gordon. The rain is pouring.

Mexico 0-0 England

02:20 , Alan Smith

21’ - Gordon is bang up for this. He drives down the left and earns a second corner off Lira. Rice will take again ...

England's Declan Rice in action during a corner (Reuters)

Mexico 0-0 England

02:19 , Alan Smith

19’ - Rice does well to stop a Mora foray into the box. Montes then drags Bellingham to the ground and fumes at the referee. It is an obvious free kick and Bellingham seems rather amused.

Good chances at both ends

02:19 , Kieran Jackson in Mexico City

Given it’s a player with Bukayo Saka’s quality, that’s a really good chance for the England winger. A good first-touch with the keeper out of his goal and he’d have been in.

Moments later, Raul Jimenez launches himself at the ball with a flying header – stunning effort and well-saved by Jordan Pickford. Hell of a sound in here when that chance went down.

Mexico 0-0 England

02:18 , Alan Smith

18’ - Alvarado fouls Saka. The crowd fumes at their perceived injustice.

England's Bukayo Saka in action with Mexico's Cesar Montes (Reuters)

Mexico 0-0 England

02:16 , Alan Smith

16’ - And Kane heads Alvarado’s second delivery towards the halfway line.

Mexico 0-0 England

02:16 , Alan Smith

15’ - Good save Pickford! Gallardo whips a ball in for Jimenez. He gets in front of Konsa, who is a yard off the pace, and directs a diving header goalwards. England’s keeper makes a nice stop and the subsequent corner is sent out by Bellingham for another.

 (Reuters)

Mexico 0-0 England

02:14 , Alan Smith

14’ - Guehi sends one over the top for Saka to get on the end of but the Arsenal winger’s first touch is sub-par and a half chance goes abegging.

A few seconds later he is back defending, winning a goal-kick in a duel with Gallardo. The Mexican wants a corner but his plea is correctly ignored.

Mexico 0-0 England

02:13 , Alan Smith

13’ - Now Mexico pass it about before a long Gallardo pass sails straight into Pickford’s path.

England were notably willing to sit back and let their hosts have the ball there.

Mexico 0-0 England

02:11 , Alan Smith

10’ - England play a bit of keep ball at the back. Mexico’s press is not quite ferocious.

Mexico 0-0 England

02:09 , Alan Smith

9’ - Rice takes it short to Saka but his cross is too deep and skids out for a throw in.

Mexico's Erik Lira in action with England's Jude Bellingham (Reuters)

Mexico 0-0 England

02:08 , Alan Smith

8’ - Gordon saunters down the left and earns England a corner via Sanchez.

Rice will take it once the ref sorts out more nudging and shoving.

Mexico 0-0 England

02:07 , Alan Smith

7’ - Bellingham is fouled by Lira, who almost pulls the England shirt off his back. Mexico then try to start some sort of row and Kane rushes in to sort it out and make his presence known. The home fans do not take kindly to it.

Five seconds after the game starts Mora pressures Guehi, giving another foul. The boos are deafening but England will be happy with this short spell.
