The Malaysian Golf Association is seeking a permanent national coach from the sports ministry to strengthen preparations for the 2027 SEA Games

SERDANG: The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) is seeking assistance from the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) to create a permanent national coach position in a bid to strengthen the national team’s preparations for the 2027 SEA Games, which Malaysia will host.

MGA president Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor said that was one of the key issues raised during the association’s recent meeting with KBS secretary-general Datuk Rahimi Ismail.

Mohd Anwar hopes that the issue of a permanent national coach will be given due attention as it seeks to draw up a more structured preparation programme for the national team.

“We have sought help from KBS to find a golf coach of high calibre,” he told a press conference during the launch of the 100PLUS MGA National Junior Development Programme (NJDP) Junior Series 2026 at The Mines Resort & Golf Club here today.

He added that cooperation with KBS and the National Sports Council (NSC) was crucial towards helping MGA implement several programmes and resolving key issues related to athlete development and preparation.

“Several issues have been raised regarding MGA’s aspirations and our future plans to elevate golf in Malaysia, especially in terms of assistance from KBS.

“We will work together with KBS on several proposals we have come up with. We will also collaborate with the NSC to see how KBS can assist us in implementing several programmes and addressing important issues,” he said.

He said MGA has also drawn up several preparation programmes ahead of the biennial Games, scheduled to be held in September 2027, including the possibility of conducting training in Sarawak.

“I met Sarawak’s Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, recently to see how Sarawak can assist us in our preparations for next year’s SEA Games,” he added.
