Kota Kinabalu: MIC Vice-President Datuk Murugiah Thopasamy (pic) has voiced hope that Sabah may one day see its first Indian state assemblyman, saying the community should not be left behind in political representation.

Speaking at the party’s state convention here on Saturday, he said Sabah’s Indians were spread across the state and could achieve representation if they united in one constituency.

Murugiah, who represented MIC president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran, added that the party would support allies in the upcoming state election once the assembly is dissolved.

He described Sabah as his “second hometown” from his time as a military officer in Labuan, praising the state’s culture of inclusivity where people of all faiths and backgrounds share common spaces.

Murugiah also highlighted MIC’s contributions to education, noting that AIMST University in Kedah had disbursed RM18 million in scholarships this year, with opportunities open to all Malaysians regardless of race or religion.
