KUALA LUMPUR – MIC will not be accepting any deputy minister posts in the unity government.
Its secretary-general Rajasekaran R. Thiyagarajan, in a statement, said the decision was made after the party held a meeting today.
Regardless, he said the party respects the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree to support a unity government.
“The Malaysian Indian Congress wishes to congratulate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who was selected and appointed as Malaysia’s 10th prime minister,” he said.
However, he said the party “respected the choices made by voters during the 15th general election.”
“May the prime minister of Malaysia be able to carry out his role and responsibility in a just and fair manner for all races in Malaysia,” the MIC leader said.
Earlier today, Anwar said the list of deputy ministers set to be named to the cabinet will be finalised soon.
On Facebook, Anwar also said the first cabinet meeting conducted this morning was held in a “harmonious” and “productive” atmosphere.
In the post, the prime minister also shared a photograph of the entire cabinet line-up, with all members of the unity government showing a different image of themselves by not wearing neckties.
Yesterday, Economic Minister Rafizi Ramli said the deputy ministers will likely be sworn in within a week or two.
Rafizi also said the process would be similar to the appointment of cabinet members, and that the number of deputies to be appointed will be proportionate to the number of MPs a party has within the unity government. – The Vibes, December 7, 2022
