Michael Carrick is on the brink of the sack as Manchester United manager as club chiefs gathered for crisis talks following the humbling 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday.
United’s technical director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada were spotted arriving at the club’s Carrington training ground on Monday morning, with Carrick then arriving later in the afternoon, as the club weigh up whether to dismiss the former midfielder following an eight-game winless run in all competitions.
Carrick dropped Bruno Fernandes following the United captain’s criticism of his manager’s tactics following the dismal 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday, but the move backfired as another abject performance from his players.
United now dwindle in 16th in the Premier League, just two points above the relegation zone, with the fans at Old Trafford turning on the squad and largely giving Carrick their support following the Bournemouth defeat. Fernandes’ comments came shortly after Lisandro Martinez took aim at the United hierarchy following defeat at Atletico Madrid.
Carrick initially returned to Old Trafford as interim manager – his second stint in caretaker role – after the dismissal of Ruben Amorim at the beginning of the year. He was rewarded with the full-time position after guiding United to third in the Premier League last term but results have dipped this season and the club have now gone eight games without a win.
Former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is currently leading the list of possible replacements, while former Germany and Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann is also available. United may also turn to another interim appointment, the same situation they were in 10 months ago.

Michael Carrick arrives at Manchester United's training ground
14:05 , Jamie BraidwoodMichael Carrick has now been spotted arriving at Manchester United’s training ground this afternoon.
The manager, who is under intense pressure following the 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth on Sunday, is said to have made the journey into Carrington in order to watch a behind-closed-doors match involving United’s Under-21s team.
But it comes as technical director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada arrived at the training ground this morning, with the club officials expected to hold talks over Carrick’s future following an eight-game winless run in all competitions.
Following the defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, Carrick said he had only had a short conversation after the game with the United hierarchy. He admitted he is not sure if chief executive Berrada and sporting director Wilcox will dismiss him.
“Just briefly like always after a game, but nothing out of the ordinary,” he added. “I will see what happens. I totally understand the situation.
“I'm not expecting anything in particular, to be honest. I am carrying on as normal. I love this place. I'll always do what I feel is going to be the best for the football club, whatever decision is made on anything really. So that's kind of it. You know, I'm not expecting anything either way.”
Meanwhile Gary Neville launched an attack on United’s players and accused them of giving up on Carrick, who dropped Bruno Fernandes following criticism of his manager’s tactics.
The Guardian have reported that Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle manager, is the “preferred candidate” of Wilcox and there has already been contact between him. The Telegraph reported that Julian Nagelsmann, also available after leaving Germany following the World Cup, is on the list of candidates too.
Possible replacements for Michael Carrick: Unai Emery?
18:59 , Jamie BraidwoodThe Spaniard has done a superb job at Aston Villa by securing Champions League qualification and ending the club’s trophy drought with victory in the Europa League. But Aston Villa will be even more determined to keep Emery given the club are only in the early stages of their rebuild under him, having completely overhauled the spine of their team over the summer. As it is, Emery enjoys complete control over his project at Villa Park, a reality he is unlikely to find at Old Trafford, while he appears enthused by the challenge of constructing a second competitive team in the Premier League. With Emery, who is under contract until 2029, United would also need to pay Villa compensation, and that may place him above their budget.
Possible replacements for Michael Carrick: Antonio Conte?
18:39 , Jamie BraidwoodThe appeal of the combustible Italian only has grown while Manchester United have been accused of becoming too passive and pedestrian on the pitch.
Conte is one of the most demanding coaches in the game and would instantly bring a level of intensity and urgency that has been lacking this season, while his CV – with Serie A titles at Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli and a Premier League crown with Chelsea – commands respect.
Conte also brought an immediate improvement when he took charge of a floundering Tottenham five years ago and led them back into the Champions League, which now has to be United’s biggest concern.
So the 57-year-old offers impact, but then what? Conte has a sharp tongue and is not afraid to criticise his bosses if he feels they are failing to support him. His exit from Tottenham in March 2023 followed a stunning evisceration of the club in a now legendary press conference at Southampton. United would be playing with fire but options of Conte’s calibre are few and far between.
In a statement on Friday, Conte distanced himself from the Manchester United job while branding reports that he is in “advanced negotiations” with any club as “speculation”.

Possible replacements for Michael Carrick: Julian Nagelsmann?
18:19 , Jamie BraidwoodThe former wunderkind of German coaching was reportedly on United’s radar when they sacked Ruben Amorim at the start of the year, but as an option for the summer following the World Cup. Well, that was a bit of a disaster for the former Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig coach, as Germany were knocked out in the last-32 by Paraguay. Nagelsmann, 39, would naturally be interested in managing United and the club’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, previously worked with him at Red Bull.
Possible replacements for Michael Carrick: Eddie Howe?
17:59 , Jamie BraidwoodThe Englishman is available after his shock decision to leave Newcastle United in the summer. Howe told the club he needed a break from management but the chance to take charge at Old Trafford, three months later, would surely be too good to turn down if an offer arrives.
The 48-year-old remains highly regarded in English football, and is reportedly the preferred candidate of the United technical director Jason Wilcox, after taking over a Newcastle side in the relegation zone and leading them to the club’s highest Premier League finish in two decades, as well as their first domestic silverware in 70 years.
Howe twice took Newcastle into the Champions League playing an energetic, high-intensity style of football that would be popular at Old Trafford.
He is currently the favourite with the bookies.

Manchester United would be left searching for a fourth permanent manager in three years under the minority ownership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos, should they part ways with Michael Carrick. Man Utd's midfield rebuild: Another wasted summer?
17:19 , Richard Jolly, Senior Football CorrespondentLast season, the only midfield partnership to work for Michael Carrick was Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo. One is now gone, the other sidelined.
Jason Wilcox’s £155m overhaul was supposed to alter that. Carlos Baleba at least began well but, like many a Manchester United signing, has then seemed to regress alarmingly.
Youri Tielemans seems unable to operate in a midfield duo and Carrick has shunted him further forward. It is an accurate reflection of Andre Santos’ mediocrity that he has started six matches and United have lost five of them.
Michael Carrick leaves Carrington
17:14 , Will CastleAnd just like that, Sky Sports is now reporting that Michael Carrick has also left the Manchester United training ground, within an hour of director of football Jason Wilcox departing.
The United manager was at Carrington today, not explicitly to take part in crisis talks but to watch the U21s.
It is unconfirmed whether he has received any update on his future.

Harry Maguire admits players are 'not doing enough' to help Michael Carrick
16:59 , Jamie BraidwoodHarry Maguire, who stood in as Manchester United captain in place of the dropped Bruno Fernandes, admitted the players are “not doing enough” to stop the club’s slide.
The United fans turned on their players following the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, applauding Carrick as he went down the tunnel before booing them as the went off the pitch.
“Michael turned our season on its head last year and we played brilliant football and got brilliant results. This season we haven’t performed well enough as individuals,” Maguire said.
“We have got to find something, question yourself, look in the mirror, that’s the most important thing – think what you can do more and contribute to the team and if we do that we’ll get somewhere.”
Bookies suspend betting on Michael Carrick's future
16:39 , Jamie BraidwoodBookmakers suspended betting on Michael Carrick’s future this morning following Manchester United’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday.
Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle manager, is the favourite to take charge if Carrick is sacked before Saturday’s trip to Chelsea in the Premier League.
Carrick is set to become the first Premier League manager to leave his job this season, which would leave United looking for a third managerial appointment since the start of the year.

It was significant, too, that there was no chanting for captain Bruno Fernandes, who was dropped to the bench after his criticism of Carrick’s tactics.

15:59 , Jamie BraidwoodMichael Carrick also used his pre-match press conference before facing Bournemouth to highlight the importance of “sacrifice”, “humility” and “hard work” in an impassioned speech which implored the “values” of the club and “respecting” the responsibility of representing United.

Next Man United manager: Who could replace Michael Carrick?
15:19 , Jamie BraidwoodWhile the problems Manchester United face run far deeper than the head coach – as highlighted by defender Lisandro Martinez after the defeat to Atletico Madrid earlier this month – Michael Carrick’s appears to be on the brink following criticism of his tactics by the United captain Bruno Fernandes, who was then left on the bench against Bournemouth.
While Carrick remained in charge for Sunday’s defeat to the Cherries, the club have already discussed potential replacements should he follow the departures of Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim under the Ineos leadership.

Man United’s latest abject display spells the end for Michael Carrick after huge call backfires
14:39 , Jamie BraidwoodFor Michael Carrick, it is now a question of when, not if. When the axe falls, when he reverts from being head coach of Manchester United to a season-ticket holder, presumably despairing of the next manager, when he pays the price for a calamity of a start to this season.

The moment Manchester United fans made their feelings clear
13:59 , Jamie BraidwoodManchester United supporters sent a clear message as to who they blame for the club’s miserable season by applauding Michael Carrick while jeering the players as they went down the tunnel following the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth.
Carrick – who impressed during his interim spell in charge last season – has come under huge pressure following United’s worst start to a season in 40 years, with an eight-game winless run revealing a fractured dressing room that has once again left the club in turmoil.
While the problems United face run far deeper than the head coach – as highlighted by defender Lisandro Martinez after the defeat to Atletico Madrid earlier this month – Carrick’s position has felt untenable following criticism of his tactics by the United captain Bruno Fernandes.
The love and respect we have for @carras16 is unquestionable. He understands this club, what it means to the supporters and what wearing that shirt demands ❤️👊🏼

Michael Carrick says waving to fans after Bournemouth thrashing ‘wasn’t a farewell’
13:39 , Richard Jolly, Senior Football CorrespondentMichael Carrick insisted he was not saying farewell to Manchester United after their 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth but admitted he does not know if he will be sacked.
United have made their worst start to a season for 40 years and lost their last two games by three goals, following Wednesday’s 4-1 thrashing by Como, and Carrick was taunted by Bournemouth supporters with chants of “sacked in the morning”.
He was still serenaded by United fans as he went down the tunnel but claimed: “It wasn't a farewell from me.”
Carrick insisted the United players are hurting as their nosedive continues but admitted he has not spoken to them all.
“There's a lot of emotion in the changing room right now, there's a lot of disappointment, there's a lot of the boys quite hurt, disappointed,” he said.

The manager dropped captain Bruno Fernandes after his criticism of Carrick’s tactics following the 4-1 defeat to Como in midweek while Lisandro Martinez spoke out against the United hierarchy following the loss at Atletico Madrid earlier this month.
"There's a few of them that don't go to bed at the right time, don't eat the right things, don't think about Manchester United every single minute of every day, and aren't living and breathing this football club as they should be - and as professionals should,” Neville said, without naming those players.
“Why? Because it's gone to their heads. But they still walk around like King William. They are nothing, some of those players.”

Man United’s problems are much bigger than Michael Carrick – and much harder to fix
12:44 , Richard Jolly, Senior Football CorrespondentAnd this point may be the end point: 16th in the Premier League, 20th in the Champions League, eight games without a win after back-to-back thrashings at the hands of small clubs. Michael Carrick, who had the best record in the Premier League last season after his January appointment, stands on the brink of the sack. Carrick’s regime has crumbled at startling speed, with brutal cruelty to a fundamentally decent man with a genuine affection for the club.
It is part of a cycle at United, whirring around ever quicker as managers come and go. Carrick has been unable to stop history repeating itself at Old Trafford.

Gary Neville warns Man Utd could still be 'up to 10 years' from PL title
12:29 , Jamie BraidwoodManchester United could be left searching for an eighth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club 13 years ago.
United have not come close to winning the Premier League in that time - with Gary Neville warning their title drought is far from ending.
"It's 13 years now without a Premier League title," he said on Sky Sports.
"That will be another five or 10 before you know it because there are other clubs set up for success and Manchester United aren't.
"They are making poor decisions. From a business perspective, this is really damaging.
"It can't just be the manager again. There has got to be consequences above that. You can't keep letting the people pick the manager who keep getting it wrong."
The Ralf Rangnick advice Man United ignored as latest crisis deepens
12:14 , Jack RathbornThe inescapable nature of Manchester United’s latest crisis could be felt as Michael Carrick exited Old Trafford following a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday.
Eight matches without a win and staring at another managerial change just months after Carrick has delivered the feel good factor once again following the turbulent reign of Ruben Amorim.
Now braced for 14 years without a Premier League title, following the Sir Alex Ferguson era, 16th and just a point above the relegation zone after eight matches.
During Ralf Rangnick’s time as interim manager of United, from 2021-22, the German offered some prescient advice on what it will take to overhaul the club, with Erik ten Hag and Amorim’s doomed spells in charge following over the next four years.
“It's crystal clear, it's not that difficult, you don't need glasses to analyse it and see where the problems are,” Rangnick famously stated back in 2022. “So now it's only about how we solve them. It's clear, not enough to do some little, minor amendments, and issues here and there. Some minor cosmetic things.
“In medicine, you would see, this is an operation at the open heart. This is also something that not one single person, as a manager, can do.”

Michael Carrick insistes Man Utd players are hurting
11:14 , Richard Jolly, Senior Football CorrespondentMichael Carrick insisted the Manchester United players are hurt by the club’s alarming downturn in results.
“There's a lot of emotion in the changing room right now, there's a lot of disappointment, there's a lot of the boys quite hurt, disappointed,” he said following the defeat at Bournemouth.
“It's not like they don't care, or they want to be in this position. The ones I've spoken to - I've not spoke to everyone individually, the ones I have spoken to, it's affecting them a lot.”

Michael Carrick's Manchester United have become fractured
09:59 , Richard Jolly, Senior Football CorrespondentA few months ago, Michael Carrick was the manager who came in with the clarity of thought to find a formation straight away, the credibility and personality to get the support of his players, the decisiveness to make a series of successful substitutions.
Now? He lost to Bournemouth using Ruben Amorim’s system and with the armband worn by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s chosen captain, Harry Maguire. The skipper who won Footballer of the Year after the initial, dramatic improvement under Carrick, Bruno Fernandes, was dropped after criticising the manager’s tactics, was left unused on the bench as a misfit, Joshua Zirkzee, and a teenager, Shea Lacey, came on ahead of him.
A relationship feels fractured; perhaps not turning to Fernandes was a sign Carrick realised he had reached the end. The Portuguese has been much United’s best player since Sir Alex Ferguson retired but he lost form towards the end of Erik ten Hag’s reign. The accusation is that too many United footballers help get managers the sack. Carrick could join the list of the dismissed.

Reports: Man Utd hierarchy hold crisis talks on Carrick's future
09:14 , Jamie BraidwoodManchester United’s hierarchy have held crisis talks on Michael Carrick’s future, according to reports this Monday morning.
Carrick’s position felt untenable following the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday as the dropping of captain Bruno Fernandes, following his criticism of the manager, failed to inspire an improved performance.
Instead, another dismal display left Carrick on the brink, with director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada now set to meet to discuss the club’s next decision.
The Guardian have reported that Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle manager, is the “preferred candidate” of Wilcox and there has already been contact between him.

"There's a few of them that don't go to bed at the right time, don't eat the right things, don't think about Manchester United every single minute of every day, and aren't living and breathing this football club as they should be - and as professionals should.
“Why? Because it's gone to their heads. But they still walk around like King William. They are nothing, some of those players.”
Gary Neville attacks ‘nothing’ Man United players for giving up on Michael Carrick
08:29 , Jamie BraidwoodGary Neville launched an attack on Manchester United’s players and accused them of giving up on Michael Carrick, who is under mounting pressure following the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday.
The manager dropped captain Bruno Fernandes after his criticism of Carrick’s tactics following the 4-1 defeat to Como in midweek while Lisandro Martinez spoke out against the United hierarchy following the loss at Atletico Madrid earlier this month.
United are now without a win in eight games and Neville, a former team-mate of Carrick’s under Sir Alex Ferguson, was critical of the current squad’s professionalism and standards following a remarkable unravelling under Carrick this season.

Next Man United manager: Who could replace Michael Carrick?
08:14 , Jamie BraidwoodWhile the problems Manchester United face run far deeper than the head coach – as highlighted by defender Lisandro Martinez after the defeat to Atletico Madrid earlier this month – Michael Carrick’s appears to be on the brink following criticism of his tactics by the United captain Bruno Fernandes, who was then left on the bench against Bournemouth.
While Carrick remained in charge for Sunday’s defeat to the Cherries, the club have already discussed potential replacements should he follow the departures of Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim under the Ineos leadership.

Michael Carrick reveals talks with United hierarchy
07:50 , Richard Jolly, Senior Football CorrespondentFollowing the defeat to Bournemouth Michael Carrick said he had only had a short conversation after the game with the Manchester United hierarchy and is not sure if chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox will dismiss him.
Michael Carrick's reaction: Waving to fans ‘wasn’t a farewell’
07:46 , Richard Jolly, Senior Football CorrespondentMichael Carrick insisted he was not saying farewell to Manchester United after their 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth but admitted he does not know if he will be sacked.
