Over the years, the NBA has evolved a plethora of times, including multiple rule changes.

As a result, it has helped the NBA remain the best basketball league in the world for decades. Now, ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season, the league is once again experimenting.

This time around, the NBA has decided to evolve how free throws are taken, and the experiment will be tested during the NBA Summer League.

Ron Harper calls out the NBA’s new one-free-throw rule experiment

According to NBA PR on X, the league is trying a rule that’ll essentially abolish the need for multiple free throws. How? Well, a player will only be awarded a single free-throw worth one, two, or three points.

However, the standard free-throw rules will still apply during the final two minutes of the fourth quarter and overtime. The experiment has been met with mixed reactions.

But Michael Jordan’s former teammate, Ron Harper, is 100% against this ‘stupid’ rule.

Many fans shared Harper’s sentiments, as a single free-throw worth multiple points will add extra pressure on the shooter.

As things stand, this is just an experiment, and there’s no word on when this rule will be officially implemented in the NBA.
