In a landmark move, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella unveiled a substantial $1.7 billion investment to propel Indonesia into the forefront of cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) development. This investment, announced during the Microsoft Build: AI Day in Jakarta, Indonesia, marks the largest commitment by Microsoft in its 29-year history in the country.
The investment encompasses a multifaceted approach aimed at bolstering Indonesia's digital infrastructure and fostering a skilled workforce ready for the AI era. Over the next four years, Microsoft plans to channel resources into new cloud and AI infrastructure, as well as extensive AI skilling initiatives targeting 840,000 individuals. Additionally, the investment includes support for Indonesia's burgeoning developer community, ensuring they have the tools and resources necessary to drive innovation.
Satya Nadella emphasized the transformative potential of AI, stating, "This new generation of AI is reshaping how people live and work everywhere, including in Indonesia." By aligning with Indonesia's Golden Indonesia 2045 Vision, which seeks to position the nation as a global economic powerhouse, Microsoft aims to empower Indonesia to thrive in the digital age.
Budi Arie Setiadi, Minister of Communications and Information Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, underscored the strategic importance of collaboration with Microsoft in achieving Indonesia's ambitious vision. He expressed confidence that the partnership would elevate Indonesia's role in the global technological landscape, positioning the nation as a key contributor to the digital economy.
Dharma Simorangkir, President Director of Microsoft Indonesia, highlighted the significance of the investment in advancing Indonesia's digital prowess. By providing essential infrastructure and fostering digital skills, Microsoft aims to position Indonesia as a hub for digital talent and innovation, driving economic growth and prosperity.
The investment builds upon Microsoft's ongoing commitment to Indonesia through initiatives like Berdayakan Indonesia (Empower Indonesia), launched in 2021. This initiative laid the groundwork for Microsoft's first datacenter region in the country, paving the way for enhanced cloud services and economic development.
With the potential to contribute nearly $1 trillion to Southeast Asia's GDP by 2030, AI presents a significant opportunity for Indonesia's economic growth. By investing in cloud and AI infrastructure, Microsoft is poised to catalyze Indonesia's journey towards becoming a leading digital economy, driving innovation, and prosperity for years to come.
