MANILA, Philippines — Second year pro Migs Pascual is continuously gaining more attention with his unique yet efficient form of shooting.
The team captain of Sarangani in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League proved to all and sundry that efficiency can be developed through constant hours of practice to build confidence.
His unorthodox style of shooing – a quick release floater – is somewhat drawing comparison from some of the best players in the NBA and the PBA.
Others compared his unique shooting form to Klay Thompson whenever he shoots those quick floaters. Some saw similarities from Golden State star guard Stephen Curry and Magnolia Hotshots’ sentinel Paul Lee, especially the arc in letting loose those three-point shots.
But there was more to Pascual’s game other than this rare shooting form and sportscasters and analysts covering the league’s matches were beginning to take notice.
“He has that some resemblance to the shot of NBA star Trae Young,” said one of the commentators who covered the games, referring to the shooting form of Pascual.
“If he would take more shots, I think he can produce more points, but Migs is a type of player who likes to get his teammates more involved because he came from a school with good basketball programs,” as observed by another sportscaster.
Pascual has averaged 6.8 points and close to three rebounds and three assists, but he had runs of good games, including his team’s 123-82 dumping of Manila where he unloaded seven three-point shots last July 27.
Gone are the days when old school basketball coaches would teach players on the proper shooting form. Multi-titled coach Yeng Guiao of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters is a firm believer that efficiency should be given more focus than form.
“In the past, coaches would tell us on the right shooting form, but take the case of Arwind Santos, for example. He will not bend his knees when shooting free throws, yet he was able to hit them with more efficiency,” said Guiao. “In today’s game, as long as you are doing your skills more efficiently and they produce positive results, that’s good enough.”
Pascual’s unique style mirrored how efficient he has become as a pro player and there’s no slowing down the young man as he will compete in the upcoming MPBL All-Star Three-Point Shootout competition on August 29 in Montalban, Rizal. TMT
