Mike Conley has revealed that he frequently helps calm Anthony Edwards when Timberwolves coach Chris Finch begins critiquing him.

The veteran guard described a passionate and intense dynamic between Minnesota’s rising star and his head coach. In Conley’s view, those moments are a natural part of Edwards’ progression.

Edwards has a reputation for showing immediate emotion during games, particularly in the aftermath of key plays. Finch, for his part, is known for demanding accountability from his players in practice, during games, and in film study.

Conley details heated exchanges between Edwards and Finch

Mike Conley explained that discussions between Anthony Edwards and Chris Finch can quickly become animated before settling down. He characterized their relationship as competitive rather than combative.

When speaking to the Star Tribune, Conley noted that he can recognize when Edwards begins to tense up during pointed criticism. At that point, he steps in to help the young guard refocus.

“They go at it. Honestly, they do. They go at it. They have days where they’re getting ready to fight, and then after the game they hug each other.”

“Finchy apologizes, or just says, ‘Man, I just got caught up.’ Ant’s the same way: ‘Like, man, you’re right. I got caught up too.’”

“I’ll be like, ‘Hey, chill. You need this. This is good. Just let it happen.’ He’ll be quiet and let coach continue to do what he does.”

Constructive tension fuels development

Within the organization, the exchanges are viewed as part of a healthy competitive environment rather than a sign of discord. Finch’s approach is centered on pushing Edwards to refine decision-making and composure.

Edwards has previously struggled with controlling emotional reactions, at times leading to technical fouls, though his composure has improved this season.

The coaching staff’s willingness to challenge him reflects their belief in his long-term potential. Conley’s presence provides balance, offering experience and perspective during high-intensity moments.

His ability to mediate ensures that the competitive energy between coach and star remains productive.
