KUALA LUMPUR – Police are investigating the movements of a military captain arrested over a fatal crash on the Maju Expressway (MEX), with sources indicating he had attended a private gathering in Sungai Besi before the early morning collision.
Sources familiar with the investigation told Scoop that preliminary findings suggest the 31-year-old suspect had consumed alcohol at the private function before getting behind the wheel.
“Initial investigations indicate that the suspect had attended a private gathering in the Sungai Besi area before the incident. He is believed to have consumed alcohol and subsequently drove despite being unfit to do so,” a source said.
Investigators are now working to reconstruct his movements before the crash, including who he was with, how long he remained at the gathering, and whether anyone attempted to stop him from driving.
“We are trying to trace his movements from the time he left the private function right up to the moment of the crash. This includes identifying who he was with, how long he had been at the gathering, and whether there was any intervention to stop him from driving in that condition,” the source said.
Police are also examining whether there was any gap between the suspect leaving the venue and the crash, as this could be key in determining his level of intoxication.
“One of the key aspects we are looking at is the timeline. We want to establish whether he drove immediately after leaving the premises or if there was a gap in time where he may have continued consuming alcohol or travelling between locations,” the source added.
“At this stage, we are looking at all possible scenarios, including loss of control due to intoxication. The evidence suggests the vehicle entered the opposite lane before the collision, but we are still determining exactly how and why that happened,” the source said.
The suspect, who was initially arrested for drink-driving causing death, is now being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder following further investigations.
If convicted, the offence carries the death penalty, or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, along with whipping if the death penalty is not imposed.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa confirmed that the suspect has been remanded for five days.
“At 10.45am, the remand order was read before magistrate Guftan Nor Asyikin Murlikamal at the remand room of the Dang Wangi police headquarters. The court allowed the suspect to be remanded for five days, from April 24 until April 28,” he said.
He said police are collecting evidence, including CCTV recordings and dashcam footage from motorists, to help establish the sequence of events.
“We are currently retrieving CCTV footage from multiple points along the MEX Highway, including toll plazas, access roads, and junctions. We are also reviewing available dashcam recordings from other motorists to assist in reconstructing the sequence of events,” he said.
Mohd Zamzuri said investigators are focused on building a complete timeline of the incident.
“Our focus is to reconstruct the entire timeline leading up to the collision. This includes identifying the suspect’s movements before entering the highway, the direction of travel, and how the vehicle ended up in the opposite lane,” he said.
“The breathalyser test confirmed alcohol presence above the permitted threshold. However, we are awaiting full toxicology reports to support the investigation findings.”
He added that further action would depend on the outcome of ongoing investigations.
“Investigations are still ongoing. We are examining all evidence and will take appropriate action based on the outcome of the investigation,” he added.
The crash occurred at 5.38am at Km1.9 of the MEX Highway from Salak Selatan towards Jalan Tun Razak, when the suspect’s Ford Fiesta is believed to have crossed into the opposite lane and collided with a Perodua Alza e-hailing vehicle carrying two Bangladeshi passengers from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
A 22-year-old passenger, Muzahid Millad, died at the scene from severe head injuries, while his wife, Nafisa Tabassun Adiba, sustained injuries. The e-hailing driver and two passengers in the Ford Fiesta, including the suspect, were also injured.
Muzahid’s uncle, Mohibul Hassan, 50, said the couple had been excited to return to Malaysia for a second visit and were well-known travel bloggers in Bangladesh.
He said he was deeply surprised by the incident.
“If he was drunk, why did he drive the car? It’s no use even asking now. If he were drunk, I want to see what the Malaysian law will do about it,” he said when met by BuletinTV3 at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL).
The victim’s cousin, Alamgir, said the family is now making arrangements to repatriate the body.
“Officials from the Bangladeshi High Commission have met us at the hospital, and we are now handling the funeral arrangements. The body will be sent back to Bangladesh once all procedures are completed,” he said. - April 24, 2026
