Religious affairs minister urges comprehensive investigation into viral silat performance at Johor cemetery, emphasizing welfare and sensitivity concerns

PUTRAJAYA: The investigation into a viral video showing a man performing silat at a cemetery in Johor must be conducted comprehensively, considering the individual’s welfare and safety.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said the man’s actions had understandably raised questions and concern among the public.

He emphasized that cemeteries are not places for acts that could cause misunderstanding, disturb the peace, or offend bereaved families.

“However, at the same time, we must respond with care and empathy,” he said in a statement.

Mohd Na’im suggested the individual might need psychosocial support or intervention from authorities or family members.

The minister welcomed swift action by Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid, who directed the Kluang District Kadi Office to investigate.

“This approach is important to ensure there are no elements that contravene decorum, Islamic law or public order,” he said.

Mohd Na’im urged the public to avoid excessive speculation and trust state Islamic authorities to handle the matter properly.

He confirmed continued cooperation with the Johor government and Johor Islamic Religious Department to ensure prudent and sensitive handling.

The investigation follows media reports that the state government instructed the Kluang Kadi Office to examine the viral video.

A 28-second video circulating on Facebook showed a man in jacket and helmet performing silat-like movements at a Muslim cemetery.

The video was recorded by a passerby and has sparked widespread discussion about cemetery decorum and religious sensitivities. – Bernama
