Minister tells federal, state govts to improve project delivery in rural Sarawak

THE federal and state governments must improve delivery service in rural Sarawak which still lacks basic amenities, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said.

Putrajaya and Kuching must tackle long-standing issues plaguing rural areas such as Kapit Division in central Sarawak, said the Kapit MP.

"There are still populations living in areas without power lines who depend on solar and diesel generators," he said.

"There are still areas without water supply, proper road links, and telecommunication coverage.

"Rural Sarawak is huge and it is not easy to administer. Kapit alone is bigger than the state of Pahang.

"Nonetheless, Sarawak and the federal side must coordinate better to improve the delivery of basic amenities that the people need," he said in Kapit town last night.

On May 1, a senior official said approved public projects in Sarawak must be delivered on schedule, urging the implementing agencies to set deadlines for their contractors.

The government has plans for public projects but the delivery must be improved, Construction Industry Development Board chairman Yusof Wahab said.

"The plans drawn up for Sarawak are for the good of the rakyat. But good plans require good execution. We urge implementing agencies to ensure their contracts deliver their projects as planned," he said.

Yusof said it has been decided that the state government will fund some infrastructure projects and claim the money later from the federal government. – May 12, 2024.
