A miscreant was shot dead in a police encounter near Khubru village in the Gannaur area of Sonepat district on Monday morning. A head constable also sustained bullet injuries during the exchange of fire.
The deceased has been identified as Gopal alias Gopi, a resident of Atayal village in Sonepat district.
As many as 25 criminal cases, including charges of murder, attempt to murder, firing and robbery, have been registered at various police stations against him.
He had already been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in two murder cases. He had been released on parole but failed to surrender after the parole period ended.
