PASIG CITY, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Manila city government are set to build rainwater impounding facilities at three sites in Manila as part of efforts to manage excess water during heavy rains.
The projects will cover Remedios Circle, Rajah Sulayman Park and the Vito Cruz ASEAN Garden at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Complex.
MMDA Chairman Don Artes and Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso signed a memorandum of agreement on Tuesday at the MMDA headquarters in Pasig City for the implementation of the projects.
The planned catchments are part of a P4-billion program for rainwater catchments, according to Artes.
The facilities will temporarily hold excess rainwater before it is pumped out when needed.
“We just have to make sure those don't overlap so there's no waste,” Artes said, referring to the need to ensure that the projects do not overlap with existing Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) projects.
