Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has pushed back against critics who have derided his diplomatic approach, saying that labelling him a “Telephone Prime Minister” trivialises Malaysia’s genuine contributions to regional and global peace efforts.

Speaking at the MADANI Rakyat programme held at Politeknik Merlimau in Melaka, Anwar addressed opposition leaders who had mocked his frequent phone diplomacy with foreign heads of state. He said that while some may see such efforts as minor or symbolic, they have, in fact, allowed Malaysia to play an active mediating role in resolving tensions within ASEAN and beyond.

He explained that Malaysia’s quiet but meaningful engagement had helped mediate discussions between Cambodia and Thailand during a period of strained relations between the two countries. According to Anwar, those same phone calls that were ridiculed were instrumental in fostering dialogue and easing hostilities — a reflection of Malaysia’s long-standing commitment to diplomacy and non-violence.

The Prime Minister noted that these acts of diplomacy, while seemingly simple, represent the nation’s strength in soft power and moral leadership. He added that Malaysia’s willingness to engage with all sides, regardless of political interests, reflects a broader vision of peace under the MADANI governance framework.

Anwar also revealed that the Government of Qatar had sought Malaysia’s assistance in facilitating discussions between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Malaysia, he said, was invited to play this role because of its positive ties with both countries and its reputation for neutrality in international conflicts. He added that efforts were currently underway in Doha to advance this peace initiative, with Malaysia serving as a moral voice encouraging restraint and dialogue.

He further reminded his critics that the essence of leadership lies not in seeking attention or grandeur but in delivering meaningful outcomes, even through quiet diplomacy. For him, each conversation, whether by phone or in person, represents a step toward peace and stability — values Malaysia has always stood for in global forums.

The Prime Minister emphasised that Malaysia, though a small nation by size, has often been recognised for its role in promoting peace and moderation on the world stage. He said those who belittle such efforts not only misunderstand diplomacy but also underestimate the respect Malaysia continues to earn internationally for its balanced and principled stance in foreign affairs.
