A moderate 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Mindanao region in the Philippines, with no tsunami threat to Malaysia, says MetMalaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR: A moderate 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Mindanao region in the Philippines at 2.57 pm today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), in a statement, said that the quake occurred at a depth of 24 km, with its epicentre located 98 km southeast of Koronadal City.

MetMalaysia said an initial assessment indicated that there was no tsunami threat to Malaysia.

On June 8, a strong 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Mindanao, killing at least 61 people and affecting more than 346,000 residents. Several aftershocks were subsequently recorded.
