This is the 14th week of Monday’s With Job, a simple idea I started to share every Monday.

One practical productivity insight to help you work better, stay focused, and finish stronger.

This week’s lesson comes from a personal experience.

Recently, I was preparing some important documents for submission. I had initially spent some time getting everything ready like photocopying and printing. I thought everything was ready for submission.

But I didn’t realize that I had overlooked some important things for the submission. I didn’t go through it thoroughly one final time before submitting the documents.

That oversight caused me

  1. A lot of stress
  2. Walking back and forth to the printing shop
  3. Took more time
  4. Felt exhausted.

What should have been a smooth process turned to be a very stressful time for me. Looking back, there were a few things I learned from the experience and I wanted to share that with you so that it’s helpful for you.

  1. Never let “I think everything is ready” replace a final check

Go through each of the documents thoroughly one final time and take your time. Don’t rush and don’t allow your assumptions to dictate that it is ready.

Remember an oversight causes you time, stress, money and also adds to unnecessary worry. So it’s better to check everything thoroughly.

2. A busy week can make us entertain assumptions

I had a busy week and because of that I entertained my assumptions that everything was ready, simply because I remember working on it.

it would have been easy for me to blame it on my busy week but I decided to do something else. Which brings me to my third point.

3. I took full ownership for the experience that I had

I realized that this is the only way I am going to grow and get better so that this oversight doesn’t happen again. I didn’t want to blame on anything else because that will not help me to grow and become better.

Taking responsibility doesn’t mean continuously dwelling on it but rather looking at what I can do differently the next time.

4. I could also ask someone else to check it for me

Sometimes we may miss certain important things because our eyes have gotten so used to the documents and the words on it. So it is therefore important that you can ask another person to go through it.

Make sure that the other person understands the process otherwise it will be just a glance through and it could end up that both of you would have missed some important things.

One final point, remember to

Ask:

Have I personally checked everything one final time?

Because sometimes, the biggest productivity lesson comes from the small things we thought we had already taken care of.

Don’t let an assumption cost you what a final check could have saved.
